Department of Justice Intervenes in Legal Challenge to Halt California's Congressional Map

The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.

This legal action, submitted to a US district court, targets the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.

"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.

The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.

"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.

Constitutional Challenge

The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.

"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.

Political Context

The legal battle represents the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.

In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.

National Implications

The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.

The party that holds the controlling share will influence the final years of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
