The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
