The star has handed over the entirety of his £25,000 honor prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which works to save the UK's small music venues.

Fender was presented with the award on 16 October as his latest record the album was named the top album of the past year.

The musician has chosen to hand the money over to the Music Venues Trust, in appreciation of the vital role small stages played in his initial steps.

"I personally would not have achieved my current career if it wasn't for all the performances I did around the region, and beyond, when I was starting out," remarked Fender. "These spaces are renowned, but they are facing challenges."

From early 2023 onward, more than 150 of these spaces have shut down – approximately 16 percent of the total UK scene.

In the last year, major artists such as the band Pulp, the group Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the trust in its attempts to keep the scene afloat, by applying a small levy to their ticket prices, which supports smaller concert halls.

He also took part, generating over £100k on his live tour to support 38 grassroots venues across the UK.

The donation supported spaces that were confronting imminent closure due to challenges caused by floods, fire incidents and bereavements, as well as permit problems, legal disputes and sound issues.

Some locations were granted financial assistance in modernizing facilities and gear that directly benefitted performers and audiences.

"The notion that revenue from concerts in major spaces helps the independent spots, where it all starts for performers like me, is just sensible," Fender has commented.

The first in the city and The Croft in the city were purchased under the community ownership scheme, which is supported by Arts Council England and supporters who acquire "ownership units" in the properties.
